How to estimate storage needs

You’ve determined you need to store your belongings, maybe short-term or possibly long-term. You’ve researched storage facilities and found the right one for you. The next step is to estimate how much space you’ll need. The DIY way is to work through one room of your house at a time. Place all the items that you want to store in one “pile”. Next measure the width and length of the items. Multiply length by width and then add all the rooms together for your total square ft. For example, if you are moving a two-bedroom home, you might want to store your mattresses, major appliances, furniture, clothing, and miscellaneous items. That would equal 1,200 – 1,600 sq. ft. So, a 10’ x 10’ storage unit would be perfect. If measuring is not your thing, check out our calculator (size guide) online at prairielifestorage.com. It will estimate your storage needs room by room—and make your life so much easier. You can also chat with our knowledgeable staff if you have questions. One last tip, if you determine you need a large storage unit, be sure to save space for a pathway through your unit. That will make it easier to find what you need when you need it.
